Prodn. of polymer layers or fibres with hydrophilic surfaces (I) comprises (a) forming a film, sheet or fibre from a soln. contg. solvent(s), polymer(s) with polar gps. (II) and opt. other additives, by known methods, opt. on a substrate while exposing the film etc. to an inert gas (mixt) contg. or satd. with water vapour in a concn. sufficient to reach the miscibility gap in the polymer/solvent/water phase diagram without causing condensation of water vapour, and then (b) removing the solvent and opt. drying the prod. USE/ADVANTAGE - Membranes (I) are used for electrodialysis, dialysis, micro-, ultra- and nano-filtration, pervaporation and reverse osmosis (claimed). Provides a simple, universal process for the prodn. of membranes (I) with more hydropholic properties and therefore increased wettability, together with better fouling properties
