PURPOSE: To extend a total luminescent display time executed for one field period by executing maintaining discharge to a row on which picture element data write is finished every time write of picture element data by a prescribed row number is finished. CONSTITUTION: A row electrode drive pulse generating circuit 10 applies picture element data pulses DP1 -DPn/2 corresponding to picture element data from a 1st row to n/2-th row sequentially to column electrodes D1 -Dm . When the write of picture element data up to the n/2-th row is finished, the row electrode drive pulse generating circuit 10 applies positive maintenance pulses IPx , IPy to row electrodes X1 -Xn/2 and row electrodes Y1 -Yn/2 repetitively in a deviated timing to start maintaining discharge simultaneously. Picture element data of the remaining (n/2+1)th row to n-th row is conducted simultaneously after the write is finished. When the processing conducted for each n/2 row is conducted for each n/8 row, image with higher luminance is displayed.
