DETECTION SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING ORIENTATION INFORMATION ABOUT OBJECTS

A system by which the orientation of a device can be determined in relation to a plurality of sensing receivers positioned at known points therearound. A directional transmission from a known face of the device is initiated by a trigger signal from a timing transmitter at the beginning of a timeslot, at which point the sensing receivers are also reset. A control system polls the receivers at the end of the timeslot to determine those on which the directional transmission has been incident. The positions of the receivers may be fixed. The directional transmission may be a radio wave, ultra-violet, infra-red, visible light or a soundwave, typically ultrasound.
