PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To autonomously relieve only a wavelength signal in wavelength- multiplexed received data processed by a wavelength converter having a fault on the occurrence of the fault in receiver side wavelength converters. SOLUTION: In the wavelength division multiplex communication system where optical communication is made between a transmitter that transmits a multiplexed input optical signal and a receiver that demultiplexes the received multiplex signal and transmits the demultiplexed signals to a plurality of receiver side terminal stations, the receiver 10 is provided with a demultiplexer 12, a plurality of wavelength conversion means 131-13n that respectively convert signals demultiplexed by the demultiplexer into signals with prescribed wavelengths and output optical signals to the receiver side terminal stations, and a backup wavelength conversion means 14 that converts the signal demultiplexed by the demultiplexer into a signal with a prescribed wavelength and outputting the converted signal in place of a faulty wavelength conversion means. |
