Acrylamide is separated from an aqueous sulphuric acid solution resulting from the hydrolysis of acrylonitrile in an aqueous sulphuric acid medium, by neutralizing the acid with a reagent giving a water-soluble sulphate (e.g. ammonia, NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3, K2CO3) to obtain a homogenous aqueous solution free from precipitates, treating with an organic solvent for acrylamide which is substantially insoluble in water and aqueous alkali or ammonium sulphate solutions, and recovering the solvent containing the dissolved acrylamide. Suitable solvents may be alcohols, esters or ketones, such as n-butanol, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone. Various extraction procedures are described. Specification 631,592 is referred to. |
