An apparatus for making meterological measurements comprises a propulsive device 1 which may be powder or hot-water operated rocket, a sonde 5 containing measuring and photographic instruments, a controlled-release parachute 11, 12 connected at least to the sonde 5 and a recovery cable 37 which unwinds during the climb of the apparatus and which is re-wound to return at best the sonde to its starting place. In the construction shown the recovery cable 37 is connected to the parachuted assembly by means of co-operating snap hooks 21, 22 of the assembly and rings 32, 33 of the cable. In the pre-firing state of the apparatus the propulsive device 1 is mounted for guidance on a launching pad 25, the snap hooks being disposed in diametrically disposed recesses 23, 24 in a fin unit 4 of the device 1 and the rings 32, 33 being supported in line with the hooks on a crown 29 of the pad 25. The cable 37 is threaded through coaxial guide loops 38. The system for paying out and rewinding the cable 37 comprises a driving motor, belt drives, a torque converter, a winder, a reel and a winch (Fig. 2, not shown). The system is also provided with a device for introducing and guiding the cable on to the reel (Figs. 2, 7, not shown). The propulsive device 1 is provided with a nozzle (Fig. 1, not shown) and a cruciform fin unit 4. A trail of smoke or opaque condensates can come from the propelling jet or a generator in the sonde. |
