1362403 Phenol-acetophenone separation HERCULES Inc 6 Oct 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 46562/71 Heading C2C A process for separating phenol from the atmospheric pressure azeotrope of phenol and acetophenone comprises distilling said azeotrope under a pressure which is higher than the ambient atmospheric pressure. In a preferred embodiment the bearing ends fraction of cumene hydroperoxide cleavage reaction mixture is subjected to said distilling to yield a product comprising hydrocarbons and phenol and maintained (a) in the range of temperatures at which pyrolysis of the pyrolysable portion of said fraction to phenol and hydrocarbons occurs, (b) at a pressure which is higher than the ambient atmospheric pressure and (c) for a period of time sufficient for substantial pyrolysis of the pyrolysable portion of said fraction to phenol and hydrocarbons to occur, whereby during said distilling a phenol-acetophenonemixture is formed in situ which at the ambient atmospheric pressure is an azeotrope and whereby said product is formed as a vapour and removing said vaporous product from the residue of said fraction. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described referring to the drawing (not shown).
|
