PURPOSE:To produce a morpholine compound useful as a solvent for separating hydrocarbons, etc., in a mild condition and in a high yield by dehydrating and cyclizing diethanolamine in the presence of a specific catalyst containing copper. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R is H, 1-28C alkyl, 2-22C alkenyl) is dehydrated and cyclized in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper, a group IV transition metal element (e.g. Ni, Zn) and a group VIII platinum group element (e.g. Pt, Pd, ruthenium) to provide a compound of formula II. The ratio of the copper to the group IV transition metal element is preferably 1:9 to 9:1, and the VIII group platinum group element is preferably employed in a molar ratio of 0.0001-0.1 based on the total amount of the copper and the group IV transition metal element. The reaction is performed at a temperature of 150-200 deg.C under atmospheric pressure. |
