The plasma display panel has multiple cells that discharge selectively to form luminescent points. The display operates with an addressing period and a discharge period. During the addressing period a potential is applied selectively to cells in the display, delivering a charge proportional to grey level of the data to be stored in that display cell. During the discharge period a maintenance potential is applied to the cells to control the discharge of energy stored in the cells to produce luminescent points in the display. During this period the maintenance potential is varied to produce the required level of luminance.
