PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detergent composition for clothing which contains a specific polymer making difficult the re-attachment of soot stains or dust stains having been released from clothing i.e. preventing the clothing from being re-stained, and further a detergent composition for clothing which prevents re-staining even in use of clothing or towels having been treated with a softener in a rinse cycle. SOLUTION: The detergent composition comprises (a) a copolymer which has a constitutional unit derived from N-vinyl pyrolidone and a constitutional unit derived from N-vinyl imidazole in a mole ratio (N-vinyl pyrolidone/N-vinyl imidazole) in the copolymer of 10/90-50/50 and a weight average molecular weight of 10,000-100,000, (b) a nonionic surfactant containing a polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether and (c) a polyethylene glycol having a weight average molecular weight of 2,000-20,000.
