6-Amino-penicillanic acid esters of general formula (I):- R1, R2 and R3 = same or different monovalent hydrocarbon groups, such as alkyl, aryl or aralkyl Intermediates in the preparation of penicillins. The esters can be converted to penicillins by reacting with acylating agents, purification, splitting the ester bridge and removal of protecting groups. Purification is easy and the ester bridge can be split by simple means without destruction of the penicillin molecule. In non-aqueous media the penicillin can be obtained directly in crystalline form.
