1,158,462. Fluorinated ether-acids, -esters and -alcohols. A. G. PITTMAN, and W L. WASLEY. 22 June, 1966 [24 June, 1965; 4 Aug., 1965], No. 27970/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3, C5 and Dl] The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein each of the symbols R represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an unsubstituted or halogen-substituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group, at least 2 of said R groups being fluorine, each of the symbols R<SP>1</SP> has the same significance as R or the R<SP>1</SP> symbols are linked together and represent an alkylene chain, and Y represents -(CH 2 ) n - COOR 1 or -(CH 2 ) n+1 -O-CO-R 1 in which n is an integer from 1 to 20 and R 1 represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl group or an aryl group optionally substituted by at least one alkyl group. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula wherein M is an alkali metal, with a compound of the formula X-(CH 2 ) n -COOR 1 wherein X is a halogen atom, to give the esters wherein Y is -(CH 2 ) n -COOR 1 , and if desired, converting by methods known per se the grouping -(CH 2 ) n -COOR 1 into a different group -(CH 2 ) n -COOR 1 or into a group -(CH 2 ) n+1 - O-COR 1 . The esters of the invention in which Y is -(CH 2 ) n -COOR 1 may be reduced to alcohols in which Y in the above general formula represents -(CH 2 ) n+1 OH or be converted in one or more stages into acids in which Y in the above general formula represents -(CH 2 ) n - COOH, or salts, halides or cationic complexes thereof. |
