An apparatus and a method for determining wear of a feedscrew (111) and barrel (134) combination includes a measuring aperture (141) formed in a wall of the barrel (134), a gage plug (57) releasably retained in the measuring aperture (141) and having an inner end curved to correspond to a curvature of a surface of the central bore (50) surrounding an inner end of the measuring aperture (141), and a retaining plug (58) releasably retained in the measuring aperture (141) for maintaining the gage plug (57) in place. When the plugs are removed, the gage plug (57) can be measured for barrel wear and a probe (115) can be inserted into the measuring aperture (141) for determining feedscrew wear. A test bar (71) simulating feedscrew wear is used to calibrate the probe (115).
