A method for efficient handover in a mobile IP(Internet Protocol) is provided to reduce latency of handover if layer 3 handover is necessary and prevent transmission of an unnecessary handover related message in case of unnecessary for the layer 3 handover, thereby improving the transmission efficiency of a network. A method for efficient handover in a mobile IP(Internet Protocol) comprises: receiving one or more link IDs(Identifications), belonging to a mobile agent, from the mobile agent(S300); determining whether a BSS(Base Station System) performing layer 2 handover is included within a subnet of the mobile agent by using the one or more link IDs belonging to the mobile agent(S340); and if not so, performing layer 3 handover(S350).
