The core of a pressurised water nuclear reactor is enclosed by an upright annular sleeve comprising vertical plates (1), with horizontal flat plates (2) bridging the gap between the sleeve and the enclosing pressure vessel. The horizontal flat plates (2) are attached to the vertical plates (1) by screws engaging in blind sockets (6,7) extending through the vertical plates (1) and edgewise into the horizontal plates (2). Each socket is provided with a bleed hole (12) inclined to the screw axis. Also claimed is a device for widening the socket and cutting the bleed hole, comprising two tools which respectively cut axially of the socket and in a direction inclined to the axis.
