[Also in Divisions F4 and H1] A method of making an electro-optical device comprises providing a plurality of parallel slots in an electro-optical crystal and providing in each of the slots a metal foil capable of applying an electrical field to the crystal. A block of LiNbO 3 crystal has slots 6 formed therein by the method disclosed in the parent Specification. Gold foils 8 are inserted in the slots and retained by an electrically conductive adhesive such as a silver epoxy 10. The silver epoxy is dried at room temperature and the excess epoxy is removed prior to heating. The gold foils may either protrude from both sides of the block of LiNbO 3 or from one side only on alternate sides, Fig. 2 (not shown). If a comparatively fragile crystal is used, the cuts 6 are relatively far apart and after the adhesive 10 has hardened, additional cuts can be made between the original cuts. |
