[Also in Division A5] The invention relates to isothioureas of the general formula in which R 1 represents a hydroxy group, a lower alkyl group that may be halogenated, a lower alkoxy group, a lower alkylthio group, a nitro group or a phenoxy group that may be halogenated, R 2 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, a lower alkyl group which may be halogenated, a lower alkoxy or a phenoxy group which may be halogenated or R 1 and R 2 each represents a hydrogen atom or each represents a halogen atom, n is an integer 1-4 and R 3 represents an aliphatic radical that may be substituted or an aralkyl radical R 4 represents a lower alkyl radical or alkoxy radical and R 5 represents a lower alkyl radical, and in which R 4 and R 5 , together with the nitrogen atom, may form a three-membered to sevenmembered heterocycle, in which case R 1 may represent a halogen atom if R 2 represents a hydrogen atom. The compounds may be obtained by (a) reacting an N-aryl-N1, N1-disubstituted thiourea with an alkylating or aralkylating agent, or (b) reacting an N-aryl-N1N1-disubstituted C-halogen-formamidine with an aliphatic mercaptan or an aralkylmercaptan or a mercaptide thereof, or (c) reacting an isocyanide dihalide of the formula with an amine HNR 4 R 5 and a mercaptan of the formula R 3 SH in any desired sequence and in the presence of an acid binding agent if desired. In an example 3, 4 - dichlorophenylisothiocyanate and dimethylamine are reacted to produce the corresponding N-aryl-N1,-N1 disubstituted isothiourea and then dimethyl sulphate added to produce N-3,4-dichlorophenyl- S,N1,N1-trimethyl isothiourea.
