The pile driving hammer comprises a frame (8) rigidly attached to the arm of a hydraulic excavator or to a crane jib. The shaft (2) of the hammer is secured to a frame which slides in guides on the main frame. The hammer is operated by a hydraulic winch and cables. The sliding frame (10) may be secured to the hammer shaft at any point along the shaft length thus permitting the hammer to be used on piles whose heads are either above or well below the lowest point of the pile driver body.
