A branch pipe (10) is attached to the pipeline (8) and a hole bored into the pipeline wall. The sealing plug comprises a pear-shaped elastic fitting at the end of a support pipe (4). The plug is extended hydraulically to seal the pipeline inside as well as over the opening of the branch pipe. The support pipe has a sliding fit through seals, to position the plug, or to retract it into the branch pipe.
