METHOD FOR COMPRESSING WIDE-ASPECT VIDEO SIGNAL AND COMPRESSING DEVICE USING THE METHOD

PURPOSE:To improve the compression efficiency of a 2nd generation EDTV signal. CONSTITUTION:A video processing circuit 22 digitizes an input video signal and also decides its system. When inputting the 2nd generation EDTV signal, a shuffling circuit 23 writes the signal in a shuffling memory at the time of framing so that data on a main picture part and data on a non-picture part are arranged at specific positions in respective areas. Data at the same positions in the respective areas are read out of the shuffling memory and a 5-macro block constitutes fixed-length units. Consequently, the data on the main picture part and data on the non-picture part are prevented from being mixed in the fixed-length units. The output of the shuffling circuit 23 is encoded by an orthogonal transforming circuit 24, a quantizing circuit 25, and a variable-length encoding circuit 26. The data on the main picture part and non-picture part are mixed in the fixed-length units, so the encoding efficiency can be improved.
