PURPOSE:To simplify adjustment for providing a white light as a concentrated light and to reduce disadvantages in cost due to generation of defective products, by enabling emission of lights of blue, green and red colors from a single semiconductor light emitting device. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor light emitting device l has a sapphire substrate 2 and a multilayer portion 6 formed on the sapphire substrate 2 and composed of an N-type semiconductor layer 3, a light emitting layer and a P-type semiconductor layer 5. The semiconductor light emitting device 1 is so constituted that a light is emitted from the light emitting layer at least in a direction perpendicular to the surface the multilayer portion 6 is partitioned into a plurality of areas in a plane parallel to the surface of the substrate 2. To cause wavelenths of lights emitted from the light emitting layers in the plurality of to differ between the areas, crystal layers of different types are grown for at least one layer in accordance with the difference of the areas. |
