摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent discharging of NOx to the atmosphere. SOLUTION: In a first combustion, amount of EGR gas inside a combustion chamber 5 is more than that showing a peak point of generation of soot, causing little generation of the soot. In a second combustion, the EGR gas amount inside the combustion chamber 5 is less than that showing the peak point of the soot generation amount. The first and second combustions are selectively performed. NOx absorbent is arranged inside an exhaust passage of an engine. In order to discharge NOx from the NOx absorbent, an air-fuel ratio inside the combustion chamber 5 is made to be rich in the first combustion. In the second combustion, additional fuel F is injected into the combustion chamber 5 during latter half of an expansion process or during exhaust process.
