A circuit for controlling a self refresh period and a method thereof are provided to control the self refresh period variably without an additional period control circuit for controlling the refresh period according to temperature variation by detecting a dummy cell voltage directly. A plurality of detection parts outputs a detection signal by detecting that a voltage charged in a capacitor of a cell decreases below a reference voltage. A pulse generation part(200) generates a self refresh pulse by a detection signal enabled first among the detection signals of the plurality of detection parts. The cell is a dummy cell. The reference voltage is a minimum sensing voltage sensed by a sense amplifier.
