[Also in Division F2] A deflector drum for use when winding a plurality of strips on a common arbour comprises a plurality of juxtaposed wheels 7 rotatable about a common stationary tubular barrel, friction discs 10, 11 located between the wheels to effect braking thereof, and expansion chambers 14 located between the wheels to control operation of the friction discs. Each chamber 14 is defined by two dish-like members 15, 16, of thin-gauge metal, hermetically welded along their central plane of union and deformable under the pressure of compressed air which is introduced into the chambers by way of passages 17, 18, communicating with the interior of the tubular barrel. In use, the wheels 7, which are provided with peripheral friction surfaces 9 and ball bearings 8, are rotated by the strips being wound; ' compressed air is introduced into the tubular barrel causing the chambers 14 to expand whereby the linings 11 of the friction discs are pressed against machined surfaces 8a of the wheels 7 consequently exerting a braking force thereon. The braking force is thus the same for all the wheels, although there may be relative regular displacement between the wheels because of different strip tensions, and this ensures uniform winding of the strips.
