Unsaturated compounds containing an epoxidizable ethylenic group are epoxidized using a two-phase liquid system comprising an aqueous phase containing an aliphatic peracid generated in situ from an aliphatic acid and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acidic catalyst and an immiscible organic phase containing the unsaturated compound in an inert water-immiscible solvent, in which a single discrete fresh or continuously renewed interface is maintained between the aqueous and organic phases during the epoxidation. The fresh or renewed interface may be obtained, for example, by mild agitation or by rocking the reactor. The peracid is preferably obtained by reacting hydrogen peroxide with a C1-C6 aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a strong acid catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid. In the examples: (a) 1-tetradecene; (b) a C11-C15 1-olefin fraction; (c) a C18-C20 1-olefin fraction; (d) a C15-C18 1-olefin fraction; and (e) 1-hexadecene are epoxidized. |
