Two layers 4, 4a of butyl sheets are continuously bonded together in overlapping formation by interposing an appropriate adhesive layer 5 between the layers 4, 4a at the position where these layers overlap; passing the overlapping portions of the layers 4, 4a, 5 continuously between adjacent tracks 9, 10 of a pair of endless moving conveyers 7; subjecting the overlapping portions of the layers 4, 4a to heat and pressure, the pressure being applied through the tracks 9, 10, until bonding is effected; and withdrawing the bonded layers 4, 4a from between the conveyers 7. " An appropriate adhesive layer " denotes a layer of material, liquid or paste adhesive which will react with the butyl sheeting when subjected to heat and pressure so as to bond therewith. Preferably, this layer comprises a tape of chlorobutyl. More than two layers of butyl sheeting may be bonded provided that the overlapping portions of each layer are separated from an adjacent layer by chlorobutyl tape. As shown, the sheets 4, 4a and the tape 5 are fed from idler rollers 3, 1, 2, respectively, to the conveyers 7, the upper track 9 of which is vertically adjustable by means 15, e.g. a coarse screw, to accommodate different thicknesses of the sheets 4, 4a and the tape(s) 5. The sheets 4, 4a may be supported on idler rollers (15a), Fig. 2 (not shown), during passage between the conveyers 7. Each conveyer track comprises links 16, Fig. 3, articulated by hinge members 17 and each carrying a pair of rollers 18 and a bearing plate 19. Pressure plates 20, 22 act on the portions 10a, 9a of the tracks 10, 9 through the rollers 18. The plate 22 is vertically adjustable by means 23, e.g. a fine screw thread. Infra-red heaters 26 are located on opposite sides of the sheets 4, 4a so that the sheets and the chlorobutyl tape are heated prior to passing between the conveyers 7, during passage between the plates 20, 22 and on emerging from the conveyers 7 prior to passing between the pressure rollers 24. |
