[Also in Division B8] Containers being loaded into or out of ships are guided by vertical non-rigid guides (shown in chain dotted lines) which are tensioned throughout the height of the loading space (e.g. between the hatchway 1 and the hold floor 3) and are removable (e.g. to allow the ship to carry other goods). The guides may be ropes or chains anchored at the floor 3 of the hold in fittings 14, 15, 16, located in detachable fittings 9, 10, 11 at any intermediate deck level and tensioned at the top by detachable devices 4, 5 and 6 which each incorporate a set of drums rotatable on a common shaft, the drums being each manually adjustable to tension the appropriate guide. There may be only two guides per stack of containers the lifting frame for a container having fork-shaped blocks at diagonally opposite corners of the top of the container to engage the guides. When the guides are removed, any beams 7, 8, 12, 13 used to locate the members 5, 6, 10, 11 &c. may be stored on the floor 3 of the hold as at 56. |
