A chemical treatment bath for e.g. photographic development comprises an insert container extending along the entire length of a tank which is divided into an upper treatment zone and a lower liquid return channel the insert having upper and lower perforated faces. A pump at one end of the tank draws liquid from the lower channel past a heating or cooling device and forces it into insert container. Pressure causes the liquid to pass through the perforations into the upper zone. As the pressure is uniform along the tank length, there is a uniform quantity of liquid in the treatment zone, resulting in uniform processing.
