PURPOSE:To prepare the titled substance in high yield, suppressing the production of by-products, by charging ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and paraformaldehyde at a specific molar ratio into a reactor, and reacting the components with each other in the presence of a sulfonic acid group-containing cation exchange resin as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The titled substance is prepared by reacting ethylene glycol monoethyl ether with paraformaldehyde at a charge molar ratio of 2/(0.80-1.05), preferably 2/(0.85-1.00) in the presence of a sulfonic acid group-containing cation exchange resin (e.g. styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer). The reaction is preferably carried out using a chlorinated hydrocarbon (especially chloroform) as a solvent. EFFECT:The formaldehyde content of waste water can be reduced.
