The control shaft (12) is mounted so as to slide longitudinally (T) and to rotate (R) round a longitudinal axis (X-X) with respect to a part of the gearbox casing. It is of the type having a sensor (16) whose principal input part (14) is connected by a coupling to the control shaft (12) of the gearbox, and is mounted to move in the direction (T) and to rotate in the direction (R) inside the housing (8) of the sensor (16) which is fixed on the gearbox casing. The sensor produces a signal which represents the position of the control shaft (12) and is designed to control gear selection. The coupling means is a half shaft pin and socket system. The socket part (32) if formed in one end of the shaft (12) and the pin part (34) is formed in one end of the shaft (14). Both shafts (12,14) are of the same diameter.
