According to the invention, articles are produced by adhesively bonding, on to a dark substrate 6 printed throughout its bulk, a skin of light wood 7 which is subsequently cut out in order to reveal the substrate in selected areas 6. The varnishing of the combination gives an appearance similar to strips of dark wood such as ebony or mahogony.
