The invention solves an optimum engagement of a chain drive caterpillar wheel with a belt chain with maximum service life. The basic diameter (D) of a toothing (11) pitch circle of the chain drive caterpillar wheel (1) is enlarged to a pitch circle diameter (D1) by a value corresponding to at most one third of an allowed enlargement (Δt) of a pitch (t) of a link of the belt chain (2) caused by its wearing during operation, which is given by the following formula:D1 <= D + [Δt / 3 x sin(180 degrees/Z)], of which D = t / sin(180 degrees/Z)where Z is the number of teeth of the toothing of the drive chain caterpillar wheel, and where the distance (U) of the shift of the centres of the diameters (R) of the bottom of the teeth of the tooth clearance is the same or longer than difference of prolongation of the circumference on the half of the embraced part of the enlarged diameter (D1) of the toothing (11) pitch circle of the chain drive caterpillar wheel (1) with regard to the basic diameter (D) of the pitch circle, which is given by the following formula:U >= (D1 - D) x (π / 2)<IMAGE>
