A process for preparation of an unsaturated ester synthesis catalyst comprises: (i) impregnating a carrier with water-soluble gold and palladium compounds, (ii) fixing the compounds to the carrier as water-insoluble gold and palladium compounds, and (iii) reducing these to gold and palladium metal. The water-soluble Au compound is impregnated and fixed in two steps.
