PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element capable of suppressing the generation of interference fringes even when using a light source having an intensive bright line and high light emitting efficiency, excellent in display quality and high in productivity. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element 1 comprising a liquid crystal layer 4 sealed between a pair of substrates 2 and 3 at least one of which is transparent, prescribed steps are scatteringly provided on at least one of faces opposed to each other of the pair of substrates 2 and 3.
