The pigment component has been made hydrophobic by treating it in its dry state with a solid, amorphous inorganic substance such as potassium silicate, silicic acid or a solid organic substance such as stearin. A hydrophobic pigment comprises (A) a luminescent pigment component chosen from SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy or Sr4Al14O25: Eu, Dy or pigments comprising SrCo3, Al2O3, Eu2O3, Dy2O3 or other alkaline rare earth elements or other metals such as calcium, strontium or barium, which has been treated in its dry state with a solid, amorphous inorganic substance (B1) such as potassium silicate, silicic acid (B2) or a solid organic substance (B3) such as stearin (i.e. octadecanoic acid).
