A method for the underground ascertainment of the depth of a bore sunk into underground formation, characterised in that the length measurement of the tubular rod parts which are to be used is ascertained and fed together with the starting depth of the bore hole into the memory of a computer housed in the drilling tool and pre-programmed with the data of the planned pattern of the bore hole, the computer is activated prior to being lowered into the bore hole or when the starting depth is reached, a sensor of the computer ascertains the number of drill line parts usedduring sinking of the bore hole and the depth of the bore hole is calculated by a processing programme of the computer on a basis of the number and length measurement of the drill line parts used. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.
