PURPOSE:To improve the starting performance of an electrodeless discharge lamp without incurring increase in the cost and complexity in the structure. CONSTITUTION:An electrodeless discharge lamp lighting device has a pair of starting electrodes 51, 52 arranged in proximity to an electrodeless discharge lamp 1 whereabouts a driving coil 2 is wound, with the pair 52 to the electrode 51 grounded. The electrodes 51, 52 are constructed in such a manner that a high-tension pulse may be fed to each of them by a starting aid 6, namely, the high-tension pulse fed to each of them causes them to impress high tension upon the lamp 1. Furthermore, electric discharge is generated between the extreme ends of the electrodes 51, 52 by the high-tension pulse so that ultraviolet radiation and visible radiation both generated by the discharge are applied to the lamp 1. Since a rare gas, mercury vapor or the like filled in the lamp 1 is accordingly broken down dielectrically by the high tension, the ultraviolet radiation and visible radiation, this facilitates starting discharge of the lamp 1. |
