PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IPS(in-plane switching) mode light modulation element with an improved aperture ratio and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The light modulation element has a liquid crystal layer 3 held between an upper substrate 2 and a lower substrate 1 being confronted therewith, and modulates light transmitted to the liquid crystal layer 3 with an electric field component generated in a direction almost parallel to the lower substrate 1. The light modulation element comprises a plurality of projecting line parts 4a... composed of a dielectric material and arranged on the lower substrate 1 side mutually in parallel with each other and a first driving electrode 4b and a second driving electrode 4c arranged as thin films on both side faces of the projecting line parts 4a... in their extending direction. Therefore the light modulation element with the improved aperture ratio is provided.
