A member 1, e.g. a pulley, chain wheel, or gear-wheel in a loom drive transmission, is frictionally coupled to a coaxial member 2, the friction coupling transmitting normal loads without slip but allowing relative rotation, limited by stop means, between the members when the load exceeds a predetermined value, adjustable springs returning the members to substantially their original relative position when the load falls below said predetermined value. In Figs. 1, 2, studs 3 project from the member 1 through arcuate slots 4 in the member 2, and springs 7 retained on the studs by adjustable nuts act on presser plates 6 to urge friction linings 5 on the member 1 and plates 6 into engagement with the member 2. On overload the coupling slips against the restoring force of Belleville spring stacks 9, tne relative rotation being limited by the ends of the slots 4 and/or the compression of the spring stacks. In Fig. 4, each stud 3 supports a spring 13 which presses a friction cone 11 into an oversize circular hole 4 in the member 2, the springs 13 acting both to maintain engagement of the coupling and to resist relative rotation of the members 1, 2 on overload. In the latter case, relative rotation causes the cones 11 to be moved axially against the springs 13. The limit stop means may be adjustable.</p>
