A timer for a washing-machine comprises a master motor 20 which actuates a rotor 44 via gearing, a cam 31 and a stepping pawl 40 carried by a lever 34. The rotor 44 is connected via gearing 45a and 47, to a cam controlling contacts 55, 60, 61 and 57, 62, 63 in the circuit of a slave motor (21) driving a cam bank (12) actuating switches (not shown) controlling functions of the washing-machine. The rotor 44 and cam bank (12) are coaxial but relatively rotatable. A toothed wheel 30 of the cam bank pivots a lever 74 clockwise to close contacts 81, 82 in a maintaining circuit for the motor (21). At the same time, pawl 40 and a restraining pawl 73 are lifted away from rotor 44 which is swung back to its initial position by a spring 85, thereby re-opening the contacts controlled by cam 51. Cam bank (12), however, rotates until contacts 81, 82 re-open when a follower 75 on lever 74 drops off a tooth 30a on wheel 30. In a modification (Figs. 6, 7, not shown), the motor 20 continuously drives a wheel (90) having ratchet teeth (90a), which act on the lever 74 which overlaps wheels 90 and 30 so that switch 81, 82 is closed by a tooth (90a) and released by a tooth 30a.
