1295377 Laminates NITTO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 27 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969 30 Jan 1970 (2)] 56440/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division H1] A laminate suitable for the protection of communication cables comprises a metallic foil, e.g. of copper, iron, steel, silver, gold, tin or aluminium, a first layer laminated on at least one side thereof comprising an ethylene/unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride copolymer, an ethylene/unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride/unsaturated carboxylic ester copolymer or an ionomer containing one of these copolymers as base and a second layer laminated on to the first layer comprising polyethylene, an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, an ethylene/unsaturated earboxylic ester copolymer or a graft copolymer of polyethylene and an unsaturated carboxylic ester. The laminate may be made by separately melting and extruding the first and second polymer as two streams, introducing the two streams into a single die, thereby forming a molten single stream and extruding the said single stream from said die to make a multi-layer film which is then bonded to the metallic foil by pressure at an elevated temperature. At least one surface of the multilayer film may be subjected to a surface treatment, e.g. corona discharge, flame treatment or chemical treatment. Suitable carboxylic acids or anhydrides are unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or anhydrides containing 2 to 12 atoms (other than the carbon atoms contained in the carboxyl group), e.g. acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid or maleic anhydride. The esters employed are preferably ethyl, propyl, or butyl esters of the above acids.
