The safety barrier for use on construction sites comprises an upright pillar (1) extending between two floors of the building and is connected to an horizontal cross-member (2). The cross-member (2) extends towards the building exterior supporting a gangplank (3) and is connected to the base of the upright pillar by diagonal bracing arms (4). The upper end of the outer arm (4) carries a safety barrier (C) which can pivot between vertical and horizontal positions. A bar (5) extends perpendicularly to the arm (4) and carries hooks over which a ring (15) on the barrier (C) locates to hold the safety barrier (C) in the required position.
