PURPOSE:To obtain menaquinone-4 (vitamin K2) useful for pharmaceutical use, by culturing a menaquinone-4-producing strain prepared by mutagenic treatment, and separating the produced menaquinone-4 from the microbial cell. CONSTITUTION:A menaquinone-4-producing strain such as Flavobacterium aquatile USN<r>-2 (FERM-P 8115), Flavobacterium aquatile K3-15 (FERM-P 8116), etc., is prepared by conventional mutagenic treatment. The strain is cultured aerobically in a medium containing a carbon source such as glycerol, a nitrogen source such as polypeptone, inorganic salts, etc. The microbial cell is separated from the culture liquid and extracted with acetone and the objective menaquinone-4 fraction is separated from the extract e.g. by chromatography.
