Device intended to improve the legibility of the registration numbers of motor vehicles. The device comprises a translucid plate 3, one face of which carries the characters 6 composing the number and the other face of which is lit by electric bulbs 8. A coloured background 7 is lit by the electric bulbs 8 so as to make the characters 6 emerge legibly in contrast. The device improves the legibility of number plates, even when the translucid plate is muddy. The device also makes it possible to produce more or less decorative versions corresponding to greater or lesser levels of luxury of the actual vehicles produced. <IMAGE>
