For monitoring a redundant safety shut-off device in the form of an electromagnetic shut-off valve ELAB in internal combustion engines it is proposed to reduce the injection quantity fed to the quantity adjuster in each case in steady-state engine mode (full load) which is ensured by maintaining peripheral conditions by shutting the safety valve in a clocked fashion and to evaluate a resulting temperature increase in the (series) suction space of the (series) injection pump for the diesel engine as an item of information which confirms the correct function of the ELAB. <IMAGE>
