The apparatus provides automatic regulation of the pressure of a gas with a double expansion in two successive stages. This is achieved with two successive valves upstream of the expansion (10) and downstream of the expansion (13) operated individually by a membrane (6,7). Each membrane defines on the one side a pre-expansion chamber (4a,5a) and on the other side an atmospheric chamber (4b,5b). The two atmospheric chambers communicate with each other and the ambient atmosphere by a single aperture (17) which is always open. The appts. also comprise a calibrated shutter device providing automatic protection against damage to the membrane.
