The device comprises a transducer (6) which converts optical information into electric signals. The document (4) and transducer carry out relative shift motion orthogonal to the direction of scanning lines (3). The transducer has several photo diode lines (8a,b), each with several sensor elements (10). In the shift direction, the photo diode lines are arranged in series, extending longitudinally in the direction of the scanning lines, and are offset in this direction so that the sensor elements are mutually offset in the individual photo diode lines. For colored originals the photo diode lines are color-selective.
