Treatment of earth slurries from washing sugar beet comprises thickening slurry, treating twice with flocculating agent, filtering and compressing the product. Process for treating slurries containing earth produced by washing sugar beet comprises: (a) initially thickening the slurry; (b) sieving the thickened slurry to remove organic material and then compressing it to a fine pulp; (c) adding a solution of a flocculating agent to the pulp and then thickening it; (d) adding a second flocculating agent solution to the product to improve its filtration properties; and (e) filtering and compressing the slurry produced. An Independent claim is included for a plant for carrying out the process comprising: (a) an earth separation tank (1) for thickening the slurry; (b) a sieving installation (2) fed by a pump from the separation tank; (c) a screen press (5) for compressing the separated organic materials; (d) a pump with an inlet for flocculating agent solution which feeds slurry to a reactor (8) containing a decanting device (9); (e) an outlet for flocculated slurry connected to a pump which has an inlet for flocculating agent solution and which feeds the slurry to a membrane filter press (13). This is connected to a comminuting device for the filter cake produced. |
