<p>The method for plasma cutting of workpieces, comprises guiding a plasma gas for the generation of plasma arc, and a secondary gas, which covers the plasma arc on a workpiece to be treated. The volume flow is switched on and switched off in the secondary gas during the cutting in periodically repeated manner. The time in which the volume flow unswitched off in the secondary gas is guided against the workpiece, is long like the time in which the volume flow switched off in the secondary gas is guided against the workpiece. The frequency for the periodical repetition is 3-30 Hz or 1000-3000 Hz.
