A platform assembly for a nuclear reactor having a core with end shields and fuel channels extending horizontally between the shields includes at least one main platform having a top load bearing surface is positioned adjacent one shield and at least one auxiliary platform is positioned adjacent the main platform. A first vertical positioning mechanism with a first drive engages and drives the main platform to first predetermined positions along a first vertically extending path. A second vertical mechanism with a second drive engages and drives the auxiliary platform to second predetermined positions along a second vertical path. The auxiliary platform permits loading and unloading to and from the at least one main platform whenever the second position corresponds with the first position. The platform assembly may be used in the operating area of a reactor area bridge positioned at each of the end shields of a nuclear reactor.
